How much does it cost to publish a book?

The honest answer is a wide range, and that spread is exactly how first-time authors get burned. This page has the real numbers for what it costs to publish a book in 2026 — every piece priced on its own, our six packages in one payment each, and the free do-it-yourself option that companies selling services rarely mention.

Add it up and hiring each job out separately runs about $1,300 to $5,000+ for a typical novel — before anyone has uploaded a single file to Amazon. That's why bundled packages exist, and it's why ours start at $699: one team doing all six jobs costs less than six strangers doing one each. It also means one person to call when you have a question, instead of five freelancers in five time zones.

One thing we've learned from 1,200+ authors since 2017: most manuscripts we see need two editing passes, not one. If a freelance quote seems cheap, ask how many passes it covers. That's where the surprise invoices hide.

Yes, there's a $0 option — here's the honest truth about it

Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is free. Genuinely free. You upload your manuscript and cover, Amazon prints copies as people order them, and you're published. Companies that sell publishing services don't like saying that out loud, so we'll say it plainly: if you're comfortable with computers and happy to do every job yourself, KDP costs nothing and it works.

What you trade for free:

Our take, honestly: if you're under 40 and enjoy fiddling with software, try KDP first. If you'd rather write books than fight file uploads — or you've already tried and hit a wall — that's what we're for. Our full guide to Amazon self-publishing costs and steps walks through the DIY route in detail.

Handwritten pages, half-finished drafts, and shoeboxes of notes are all welcome — we work in drafts, and our ghostwriting team can carry a story the rest of the way.

The royalty math on a $20 book

Here's the arithmetic we walk every author through before they sign anything, because the second-biggest cost question after "what do I pay?" is "what do I earn?"

So at $699, the package pays for itself somewhere around 70 to 100 sold copies. We won't promise you'll sell them — nobody honest will — but that's the real break-even line, and you deserve to see it before you spend a dollar.

All six packages, all six prices

No "call for a quote" games. These are the current prices with the 50% promotion applied — one payment each, and a 50% deposit start is available. Full feature lists are on the pricing page.

Cost questions authors ask us on the phone

The same answers we give at (229) 518-4453, 1pm–11pm ET, seven days a week.

Why do most publishing companies hide their prices?

Because a salesperson on the phone can size you up and quote accordingly. We think that's exactly backwards — you should see every number before anyone has your phone number. That's why all six package prices are printed on this page and on our pricing page, and why the price we agree on goes in writing before you pay.

What does Amazon self-publishing cost?

Uploading to Amazon KDP is free — Amazon makes its money from each sale, not from you up front. The real Amazon self-publishing cost is the work around it: editing, a cover, and formatting, which run $1,000–$4,000 hired out or $699 bundled with us. Our Amazon self-publishing guide covers the whole DIY route.

Are there hidden fees after the package price?

No. The package price is the whole price for publishing, and we take no share of royalties — ever. Separate services are exactly that, separate and optional: marketing from $499/mo plus a $500 setup, ghostwriting from $1,600. You'll never find them added to an invoice you didn't ask for.

Can I pay in parts?

Yes. You can start with a 50% deposit and pay the rest as we work. Payment is by card or bank through a secure invoice, so there's a paper trail from day one.

Does the $699 price really include the ISBN?

Yes — an ISBN is included in every package. If you want the ISBN registered in your own name as publisher, that's $200 through us versus about $300 buying direct.

How much does it cost to publish a children's book?

$1,499 with us, including 12 custom illustrations, hardcover, and picture-book formatting. Illustrations are why children's books cost more than novels — hired separately, art alone runs $600–$1,800. Details on our children's book publishing page.
